(N scale)

Not your average box car ... incredibly popular among shippers numbering beyond the hundreds of thousands. These specially equipped insulated box cars were cushioned from slack action, protected with load equipment to prevent shifting loads, and insulated from extremes in temperature. Serving the food industry primarily, they were used by any shipper requiring a constant temperature and a nice cushioned ride.

*These 70-ton Plate C cars were considered bunkerless refrigerator cars or insulated box cars and carried the mechanical designation of RBL or XLI, respectively. They were assigned to temperature sensitive commodities such as dried foods, canned goods, jar goods, drinks, packaged foods (rice, pasta, cereals), pet foods, nursery plants, seeds and xmas trees. PC&F (now known as PACCAR) had it’s beginnings making railroad logging cars. But the company has a varied history: they were involved in making the armour for Sherman tanks during WW2, OEM of heavy duty trucks (Kenworth c. 1945, Peterbilt c. 1958), and of course, specialized in refrigerator car manufacturing & repair, finally exiting the railroad OEM business in 1984. It continues today as a one of the largest class 8 truck manufacturers worldwide.

The Great Northern Railway which stretched from the Pacific Northwest to the Great Lakes region merged into Burlington Northern in 1970. These 50-ft 70-ton Insulated Box Cars were built by Pacific Car & Foundry for Great Northern in October 1965 and were painted in the Glacier Green paint. They were equipped with 10-ft Superior Plug Doors. They were used in carrying temperature sensitive products such as food.

Burlington Northern's Western Fruit Express handled food products from the Pacific Northwest to the distribution points to Chicago and beyond.   RBWX road marks became RBBN after the formation of Burlington Northern suggesting a wholly owned subsidiary instead of a separate leasing company.  They were equipped 10-ft Superior Plug Doors, Hydra-Cushion under frame,  body side vents, and had interior restraining devices to keep load from shifting.   These cars were classified as RBL which stands for Refrigerated, Bunkerless, Loader-equipped.   They were well insulated to keep temperature constant and as the name suggest carried food products that didn't require special refrigeration.

The Evergreen Freight Car Corporation was established to provide an adequate supply of freight cars specifically to carry forest products from northern California and Oregon. The demand to carry timber products was greater than the supply of available railroad cars for this specific purpose. Due to a shortage of available cars, box cars not specifically for the purpose for carrying lumber products were diverted, especially during the U.S. housing boom in the 1960s and 1970s. During 1966, R.J. Russell saw an opportunity to acquire box cars without having to do so in the name of Southern Pacific for accounting purposes. The wholly-owned company, Evergreen Freight Car Corp. (EFCX) was set up by Bankers Leasing Company which was the leasing arm of the Southern Pacific Railroad. These particular PC&F 70 ton Insulated box cars were equipped with Hydra-Cushion underframe, body side vents, and two 8-ft Landis plug doors. The unique door design is attributed to Robert Landis of Los Altos, CA in 1964. These Landis equipped cars were built in 1969-70 and carried numbers from 3200 to 3500. They lasted well into the late 90's before being repatriated to SP.

In 1988, Philip Anshutz's Rio Grande Industries bought the Southern Pacific after the line's ill-fated merge attempt with the Santa Fe. The Southern Pacific brand continued replacing Rio Grande. In the 1990s, the new speed lettering style was adopted as a tribute to the old Rio Grande speed lettering. Kevin Bunker came up with the design in late 1988 by painting a model EMD SD40T-2 locomotive and showing it to Philip. It was probably in the mid to late 1990s that the new logo design started to appear on these box cars. They were originally built by PC&F in August 1972 through March 1973. They were SP class B-70-66 and were equipped with DF-B loaders (moveable bulkheads), and Hydra-Cushion underframes.

The Western Fruit Express handled food products from the Pacific Northwest to the distribution points to Chicago and beyond.   RBWX road marks became RBBN after the formation of Burlington Northern suggesting a wholly owned subsidiary instead of a separate leasing company.  During the early days of BN, it was common to see cars still with Great Northern paint but with re-stenciled reporting marks.  They were equipped Superior Plug Doors, Hydra-Cushion under frame,  body side vents, and had interior restraining devices to keep load from shifting.   These cars were classified as RBL which stands for Refrigerated, Bunkerless, Loader-equipped.   They were well insulated to keep temperature constant and as the name suggest carried food products that didn't require special refrigeration.  Model features realistic ride height,  10-ft Superior Plug Doors, body side vents, Hydra-Cushion under frame, rivet details along the side body seams, metal wheels, knuckle magnetic couplers.

These Burlington Northern PC&F XLI box cars were formerly Frisco cars.  They were repainted by Burlington Northern in the '90's  which became one of the last paint scheme used prior to BNSF.  These cars are still being used by BNSF in 2012 with this BN scheme.   Their mechanical designation of XLI means box-insulated loader equipped with securements or permanently attached movable bulkheads.   They had 20-inch end of cushioning devices in the draft gear and had 10'-6" wide Youngstown Plug Doors.   Plug doors provided a tightly sealed compartment and flushed inside surface when door is closed eliminating the need for additional ladening to keep cargo in place.  They carried food products which didn't need additional refrigeration.   Model features realistic ride height, 10'-6" Youngstown Plug Door, detailed under frame, rivet details along the side body seams, metal wheels, body mounted couplers.

The St. Louis Southwestern Railway, commonly known as the Cotton Belt is a subsidiary of the Southern Pacific.  Not surprisingly, SP turned to PC&F, for a large batch of these RBL cars built between 1969 to 1970 and were classified as B-70-46.   B = box car; 70 = capacity in tons; 46 = number of orders. These Plate C cars were insulated for carring non-perishable food products and beverages, and had a volumetric capacity of around 4860 cu. ft.  The "LD" labeling is SP's marketing slogan for attached bulkheads to keep cargo from shifting.  They were equipped with 20-inch Hydra-Cushion devices that absorbed slack action.   Model features realistic ride height, 6' and 8' Youngstown Plug Doors, Hydra-Cushion under frame, rivet details along the side body seams, metal wheels, body mounted couplers.
